Is it safe to use your phone during a thunderstorm?

Cell phones and cordless handsets are safe during a thunderstorm as long as they are not connected to a charger. Corded phones are not, and are a leading cause of indoor lightning injury, because the line runs directly outside the building.
Can lightning strike you through your phone?[1][2]
Not through a cell phone running on its own battery. There is no conductive path from outside the building to the device, and the phone does not attract lightning. The NWS states that cell and cordless phones are safe if they are not plugged into an outlet.
The myth that phones attract strikes confuses two different things. Metal does not attract lightning, and a handheld object adds nothing meaningful to your height or shape. What matters indoors is whether the thing you are touching connects to the outside world.
A phone on battery does not. A phone on a charging cable does, through the mains wiring, which is why the charger is the whole distinction rather than the phone itself.
Why are corded phones dangerous?[3]
Because the telephone line runs from outside the building directly to the handset at your head. Conduction along wires is one of the five ways lightning injures people, and corded phones have historically been a leading source of indoor casualties.
A strike to the line or nearby ground induces a surge that travels the copper into the house. Holding the handset puts your ear and hand at the end of that path, which is why the injuries associated with corded phones include ruptured eardrums and burns to the face.
This risk has faded as landlines have disappeared rather than because anything about the physics changed. Where corded phones remain, in older buildings and some workplaces, the advice is unchanged.
Is it safe to charge a phone during a storm?[1]
Better not to. A charging cable connects the device, and whatever is holding it, to the mains. Unplug and use the battery for the duration of the storm, which costs nothing and removes the only real path.

Should you use your phone to check the storm?[1]
Yes, that is one of its better uses. A phone on battery is safe, and checking radar, warnings or a live strike map is far more informative than looking out of the window, especially for judging whether a storm is approaching or leaving.
Just remember that both radar and strike data describe the recent past, and thunder is the immediate signal. The screen tells you what the storm has been doing; the sound tells you that you are within range right now.
