Is it safe to shower during a thunderstorm?

No. The National Weather Service advises against showering, bathing or washing dishes during a thunderstorm, because lightning can travel through metal plumbing and the water inside it. Recorded shower deaths are rare, but injuries do happen, and the precaution costs you almost nothing.

Can lightning really reach you in the shower?[1][2]

Yes, through conduction. Lightning that hits a house or a nearby utility line can travel along metal pipes and wiring, and a shower puts you in contact with both the plumbing and a stream of tap water. The NWS lists conduction as one of the five ways lightning injures people.

Conduction is the reason most indoor lightning casualties happen at all. The strike does not need to hit you, or even hit your house directly. It needs a conductive path, and a building full of copper pipe and wiring is exactly that. Touching a tap, a metal drain or the water column completes a route to you.

Tap water carries dissolved minerals, which makes it a far better conductor than pure water. That distinction matters when people repeat the line that water does not conduct electricity well. Distilled water does not. What comes out of a municipal supply does.

Plastic supply lines change the picture but do not clear it. Many homes with PVC or PEX piping still have metal fixtures, metal drains and grounded electrical circuits within arm's reach of the bath. You usually cannot tell from inside the bathroom what your walls contain.

Low in absolute terms. Lightning kills about 20 people a year in the United States, and the NWS puts the annual odds of being struck at roughly 1 in 1,222,000. Shower and bath cases are a small slice of an already small number, but they are not zero.

The honest framing is that this is a cheap precaution against an unlikely event, not a common way to die. Waiting out a storm before you shower costs you half an hour. That is a very different calculation from advice that would cost you a day's work.

It is worth being clear about where the numbers come from and what they leave out. Fatality records capture deaths well. They capture injuries much less completely, because a shock that leaves someone shaken but walking often never becomes a report. The gap means the recorded death count understates how often lightning finds indoor plumbing.

What else should you avoid indoors?[1]

Avoid corded phones, anything plugged into an outlet, and contact with plumbing or concrete that has metal reinforcement inside it. Cell phones and cordless handsets are fine as long as they are not connected to a charger.

The pattern behind that list is simple: stay away from anything that runs continuously from outside the building to inside it. Wires and pipes both qualify. Wireless devices running on their own battery do not, which is why a phone off the charger is genuinely fine.

How long should you wait before showering?[1]

Wait 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder. That is the same interval the NWS uses for going back outdoors, and it exists because storms keep producing strikes well after the rain over your house has stopped.

Storms trail their own lightning. Strikes routinely land more than 10 miles from the rain shaft, so a sky that looks clear overhead can still be inside a storm's reach. Thunder is the honest signal, and 30 minutes of silence is the threshold.

If you want to replace the count with something concrete, a live strike map shows where the flashes actually are rather than where the rain is. Watching the nearest detected strike move away is a more direct answer than judging by how bright it looks outside.
