Golf and lightning: why courses are so dangerous in storms

A golf course combines everything lightning favors: wide open ground, scattered tall trees and people carrying raised metal in the middle of it. Leave at the first thunder or warning horn, go to the clubhouse or a hard-topped cart with a metal shell, and skip the on-course rain shelters.

Why are golf courses so dangerous in a thunderstorm?[1][2]

Because a course is designed to be open. Fairways are flat and treeless, which leaves players as the tallest objects, and the scattered specimen trees that break up the layout are precisely the isolated tall targets lightning prefers.

Sports and recreation account for a substantial share of US lightning deaths, and golf is a recognisable part of that pattern. The reason is layout rather than the game itself: several hours spent walking across open ground during the afternoon hours when storms peak.

The trees make it worse rather than better. A course with a few large oaks scattered through open turf is a landscape of isolated tall conductors, each with a person likely to walk under it when rain starts.

Do golf clubs attract lightning?[3]

No more than anything else. Metal does not attract lightning; height, pointed shape and isolation do. Raising a club above your head on an open fairway makes you the tallest pointed object in the area, which is the actual risk.

The distinction sounds pedantic and matters in practice. Dropping your clubs and standing in the same spot does very little. Getting off the fairway does a lot. People who believe the metal is the problem often solve the wrong half of it.

Umbrellas fall into the same trap. A raised umbrella with a metal shaft adds most of a meter of height and a point at the top, held by a person standing in the open because it has started to rain.

Where should you go when the horn sounds?[4][5]

The clubhouse or another substantial building, or a hard-topped vehicle with the windows up. Open-sided rain shelters and golf carts do not protect you, despite being the closest thing on most courses.

Some courses do install properly grounded lightning shelters with down conductors and buried grounding. Those are real protection, and they are usually signed as such. If the structure is just a roof on four posts, treat it as rain cover only.

How much warning does the horn give you?[4]

Less than most players assume. Detection systems typically alert on strikes within a set radius, and lightning can strike more than 10 miles from a storm's rain. The first flash in your area can arrive under clear sky, so the horn is a leave-now signal.

The common failure is finishing the hole. A green is a few minutes away, the sky is still bright, and the horn feels precautionary. Those few minutes fall in the window where the storm is close enough to strike and not yet close enough to look threatening.

Play resumes 30 minutes after the last thunder, which is the same rule everywhere else. Courses that restart earlier are making a scheduling decision rather than a safety one.
