Are cars safe during a lightning storm?

A hard-topped metal car is one of the safest places outdoors, because the metal shell routes current around the occupants rather than through them. Rubber tires have nothing to do with it. Convertibles, fiberglass bodies and open-cab vehicles do not offer the same protection.

Why is a car safe in a lightning storm?[1][2]

The metal roof and sides conduct the current around the outside of the passenger compartment and into the ground. The shell acts as a shield, so the charge stays on the skin of the vehicle instead of passing through the people inside it.

This is the same principle that keeps aircraft intact when they are struck in flight. A closed conductor carries current on its outer surface, leaving the interior largely undisturbed. The car does not have to be perfectly sealed for the effect to work.

The protection is real but it is not absolute. Strikes routinely damage the vehicle itself: blown tires, fried electronics, pitted antennas and burnt paint at the entry and exit points. Walking away unharmed from a car that now needs a tow is the normal outcome.

Do rubber tires protect you from lightning?[2]

No. This is the most persistent lightning myth there is. A bolt that has already crossed several kilometers of air is not stopped by a few millimeters of rubber. The metal body is doing the work, and the current reaches the ground through or around the tires regardless.

The scale comparison is what makes the myth collapse. Air is a strong insulator, and lightning breaks through kilometers of it. Treating a tire sidewall as a meaningful barrier after that is like expecting a sheet of paper to stop a bullet that has already gone through a wall.

The myth does real harm, because it leads people to trust the wrong vehicles. If tires were the protective element, a motorcycle or a convertible would be as safe as a sedan. They are not, and the difference is entirely about whether there is metal above and around you.

Which vehicles are not safe?[1]

Anything without a closed metal shell. Convertibles with the top up, motorcycles, bicycles, golf carts, open-cab tractors and fiberglass-bodied vehicles all leave you exposed, because a fabric or composite roof does not conduct current around you.

What should you do inside the car?[1][3]

Pull over somewhere safe, keep the windows closed, and avoid touching metal that connects to the body: door handles, the steering column, the radio, the gear lever. Wait 30 minutes after the last thunder before getting out.

The reason to keep your hands off interior metal is that current travelling through the shell can arc across gaps. Sitting with your hands in your lap is enough. You do not need to contort yourself or lift your feet off the floor.

Do not park under trees while you wait. A tree that takes a strike can drop a limb onto the roof, and side flash from the trunk to the vehicle is a documented path. Open ground with the car as the tall object is safer than shelter that can fall on you.

One thing worth knowing before you need it: if the car is struck and starts to burn, getting out is the priority, but step out rather than climbing down while holding the frame. Touching the vehicle and the ground at once puts you across the path the current wants.
