Lightning safety for pets and livestock

Bring pets indoors before a storm. A doghouse, kennel or chain gives no protection, and a tethered animal cannot leave. Livestock deaths usually come from ground current, which is why cattle sheltering under a lone tree or against a wire fence can die in numbers from one strike.
Are dogs safe outside in a thunderstorm?[1][2]
No. A doghouse or kennel is not a substantial building and gives no lightning protection at all. A chained or tethered dog is worse off still, because it cannot move away from a tree or fence that becomes the strike path.
The tether is the specific problem. A loose dog in a yard will usually try to get somewhere sheltered, while a tied one is held next to whatever object it was tied to, which is frequently a post, a tree or a metal run.
Bring them inside and apply the same indoor rules you would for yourself. Keep them away from windows, doors and plumbing, and off concrete floors in garages and basements, since poured concrete usually contains steel mesh or rebar.
Why do so many cattle die from a single strike?[2]
Ground current. Energy spreads outward through the soil from the strike point, and a four-legged animal spans a much greater distance between contact points than a person does. The voltage difference between front and back legs drives current through the chest.
This is called step potential, and body length is what makes it so lethal to livestock. A person standing with feet together experiences a small voltage difference. A cow standing with two meters between front and hind hooves takes a far larger one, directly across the heart.
It also explains the clustering. Herds shelter together under the same tree or along the same fence line, so one strike delivers ground current through a tightly packed group, and losses of a dozen or more animals from a single flash are documented regularly.
What makes wire fences dangerous?[2]
They conduct current far from the strike point. A strike anywhere along a wire fence can carry lethal current hundreds of meters down the line, killing animals standing against it well away from where the lightning actually landed.
Long metal fences behave as unintended transmission lines. The strike may hit a fence post on a hilltop while the animals that die were sheltering along the same wire in a valley, which makes the cause easy to misidentify.
Grounding fence lines at intervals reduces this, and it is standard practice on properties with electric fencing. Ungrounded wire runs are the ones that carry current furthest.
How do you help a frightened animal indoors?[1]
Give them an interior space away from windows and plumbing, and let them choose where to settle. Many dogs seek out bathrooms or laundry rooms, which are among the worst options because of the pipework, so close those doors before the storm arrives.
Storm anxiety in dogs responds partly to the pressure change and the static build-up, not just the noise, which is why some animals become agitated before there is anything to hear. That early warning is a useful cue to bring everyone in.
Interior rooms without plumbing work best: a hallway, a closet, a central bedroom. The goal is somewhere they feel enclosed that is also away from the conductive paths through the building.
