Lightning safety for hiking, camping and the backcountry

A tent gives no lightning protection at all. In the backcountry the real defense is timing: mountain storms build in the afternoon, so summit early and descend before they form. If caught, get off ridgelines and summits, avoid lone trees, and spread the group out.

Does a tent protect you from lightning?[1]

No. A tent provides no protection whatsoever. The fabric does not conduct current around you, the poles are often metal or carbon and add height, and you are usually pitched on open ground. A tent is shelter from rain and nothing else.

This is worth stating bluntly because a tent feels like a building once you are inside it, zipped in and dry. The feeling is the problem. Every element that makes a real building safe, the grounded wiring, the plumbing, the conductive frame, is absent.

Tent poles make it slightly worse than lying in the open. Aluminium and carbon poles are conductors standing upright in a spot chosen for being flat and clear, which is a reasonable description of a preferred strike target.

Why do mountain storms happen in the afternoon?[2]

Terrain heats through the morning and forces air upward along slopes. That lift plus daytime heating builds cumulus into thunderstorms, which is why mountain ranges produce storms on a near-daily schedule in summer, typically peaking in early to mid afternoon.

The regularity is what makes it manageable. In ranges like the Colorado Rockies or the Alps in summer, the pattern is reliable enough that the standard advice is to be off the summit by noon or early afternoon. That is a planning rule, not a reaction to a forecast.

Alpine starts exist because of this. Leaving at 4am to stand on a summit at 8am is not about the view; it is about being back below treeline before the day's convection organises itself.

Where should you go if a storm catches you?[1][3]

Descend. Get off summits, ridgelines and exposed saddles, move away from lone trees and rock towers, and head for lower ground or continuous forest. If a hut, vehicle or building is reachable, that beats every outdoor option.

Caves deserve a specific warning because they look like the obvious answer. A shallow overhang puts you in a gap that current will happily jump across, and the rock face itself channels it. Only a genuinely deep cave, well back from the entrance and away from the walls, is any better than open ground.

What should you carry and check beforehand?[1]

Check the forecast for convective risk before you leave and set a turnaround time. Carry a way to receive weather updates if you have signal, and know your escape routes off exposed terrain, because the descent choice matters more than any gear.

Metal gear is worth one sentence, because the myth persists. Trekking poles, ice axes and pack frames do not attract lightning, and the NWS is explicit that height, pointed shape and isolation are what matter. That said, holding a pole above your head on a ridge makes you taller and more pointed, so stow them while you descend.
